Plug-in hybrid cars

Electric cars with a back-up plan.

Plug in to uncompromised performance.

Volvo plug-in hybrid cars offer a more refined drive without compromise. We’ve combined an enhanced electric motor for everyday city driving with a high-performance combustion engine for longer trips and extra power when you need it.

Long electric range

We want to create a confident and seamless transition to the fully electric future of driving. So, we designed our plug-in hybrids to offer enough electric range to power your daily commute and city driving.

Power on command

Our next-generation powertrains deliver powerful, responsive handling with smooth, quiet acceleration. The added capacity of a high-performance petrol engine gives you rapid, strong acceleration when you need it.

True One Pedal Drive

Smoothly navigate stop-and-go traffic with One Pedal Drive. This lets you accelerate and brake just by applying and releasing pressure on the accelerator pedal. Your car will then convert the kinetic energy generated from braking into battery power.

Five modes to tailor your drive.

Switch between drive modes at the touch of a button. The electric motor and petrol engine are designed to work together in perfect harmony for seamless hybrid performance.

Pure

Electrify your everyday commute by driving in Pure mode. You’ll get a smoother, quieter drive with zero tailpipe emissions.

Hybrid

Settle into Hybrid mode, and your car will use both the electric motor and internal combustion engine. Get top performance, electric range, fuel efficiency and comfort without a second thought.

Power

Shift into Power mode for sporty driving with a faster acceleration response. The electric motor and petrol engine work in combination for maximum performance and driving stability.

AWD

Engage AWD mode when driving in slippery conditions or towing a high payload to gain extra traction and stability. We’ve developed a more powerful rear electric motor and improved the AWD characteristics designed to give you more confidence on the road.

Off Road

Activate Off Road mode in challenging road conditions below 40km/h. This helps you stay in control by optimising acceleration, steering and transmission with locked AWD and Hill Descent Control. This is applicable for XC models only.

Ready when you are

Schedule your plug-in hybrid to charge overnight so it’s ready for you in the morning. Our next-generation batteries can replenish their energy to 100 per cent in as little as three hours with our new 6.4kW 2-phase onboard charger.*

Pre-set comfort

Choose the interior cabin climate as the battery charges, and your car will adjust to that temperature by the time you’re ready to go. Pre-climatisation while charging also improves the battery performance on the road.

Charge on the go

Boost your battery range and fuel economy as you drive with regenerative braking. We’ve engineered our electric motors and energy-dense batteries so you can get an extra charge from the energy created and stored when you brake.

We want your hybrid car to fit in seamlessly with your daily routine, so we've evolved our range of battery features to make charging simpler, faster and easier.

*To benefit from the shorter charging times our new onboard charger can provide, you need to charge with a 3-phase charger. The charging time is preliminary and derived from estimates and calculations performed by Volvo Cars and these outcomes are not guaranteed. Please also note that charging times can vary and are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition. Vehicle certification pending.

What do you want to know about Volvo plug-in hybrid cars?

Do hybrid cars have a high towing capacity?

Volvo plug-in hybrids offer great towing capacity, especially thanks to efficient AWD. Maximum towing capacity depends on the make and model of your Volvo car.

Do hybrid cars need to be charged?

Yes, all hybrid cars need to be charged, but only plug-in hybrids can be charged at electric charging points at home or on the road. Batteries in mild hybrids and full hybrids rely on internal charging through regenerative braking. Learn more about charging.

Are hybrid cars good for long distance driving?

Volvo plug-in hybrids are designed to travel long distances without you having to worry about the battery range. The dual power of the combustion engine and electric motor ensures increased efficiency and performance across long distances.

Are all hybrid cars automatic?

Our entire range of plug-in hybrid cars feature automatic transmission.

What is the difference between mild hybrids, full hybrids and plug-in hybrid cars?

Mild hybrid cars have a combined starter motor and electric generator that gently supports the combustion engine to use fuel more efficiently, but they cannot run on electricity alone. They use the combined starter and generator for smooth take-offs and braking or slowing the car, while recovering brake energy to be stored in a small 48-volt battery. Full hybrid cars also generate battery power through regenerative braking, but they have a more powerful battery. So, they can run on pure electric for short distances or in tandem with the petrol engine. Our plug-in hybrid vehicles are designed with a considerably larger 400-volt battery and better performance with the added option of different driving modes. This means that the fully electric range is larger still and many drivers can operate their car on the electric motor alone. The plug-in hybrid battery is mainly charged by plugging into a home wallbox or public charging point. But it can also be charged while driving through brake energy regeneration.
